Details
This replica is based on an iconic ceramic figurine from the Palaeolithic site of Dolni Vestonice in Moravia, Czech Republic.

The original was found nestled in a layer of ash on the floor of a hut in the Moravian basin south of Brno and dates from around 25000BC-23000BC. She is amongst the oldest known ceramic figurines in the world and was found alongside a number of animal sculptures including a bear, lion, mammoth, horse, fox, rhinoceros and owl.  This early depiction of the human form gives us a real insight into the people who made her and the numerous other sculptures and carvings found at this rich historic site.

One of her most charming features was discovered during a scan where it was found that a child's fingerprint remained impressed into the clay, leaving a permanent record of the Palaeolithic people of the time.

Created by Mammoth hunters during the last Ice Age, these small sculptures seem to have been deliberately deposited in the landscape as some sort of sacrifice and were probably intended to ensure fertility.
