Details

The divine touched every part of Greek and Roman life, and the deity responsible for watching over the shepherds was the free-spirited mountain and forest-dwelling Pan. Predominantly worshipped between 800 BC and AD 400, Pan is distinctive for his human torso, goat legs and horns sprouting from his head. He is said to be the son of Hermes and a forest Nymph, Penelope. However, there are various myths connected with his parentage that give differing versions of his lineage.

Many tales are told of Pan, and his strong association with music and dancing means he is often credited with inventing the panpipes.

It is said that he made the first panpipes out of hollow reeds that had once been the nymph Syrinx, who was transformed into a clump of reeds by Gaia in an attempt to protect Syrinx from Pan's amorous and very unwanted advances.

Pan had a reputation of sneaking up on and frightening travellers, thus leading to the creation of the term 'panic'. Thank goodness we have soothing panpipe music to counteract this sense of panic ;)

Materials

White Earthenware or Pipeclay

Dimensions

Approx. 430 mm tall, 180mm wide, 100 deep

Production

As with all my Museum Quality Replicas, we have made this pot, as the original would have been, entirely by hand from natural clay and using replicas of the types of tool that the ancient makers would have used. As each pot varies, you may not receive the same cup in the image, but you can be sure that your pot will be one of a kind due to the variations caused by the firing process.
