Details

This replica tile antefix has the inscription LEG XX and the boar emblem of the 20th Legion. The tile that inspired this replica is dated to the 2nd-3rd century AD and was excavated by archaeologists in Holt, Clwyd; it is now housed in the Roman collection at the British Museum.

This tile would have been one of a row of identical ornate tiles set along the eaves of a tiled Roman roof, and they would have been manufactured in Romano-Britain by the tilery of the Roman army's 20th Legion.

The symbolism of these stylised tiles were intended to proclaim the presence of the 20th Legion and announce to all the strength and power of those within the building. The Legion was one of four legions brought over by Claudius to invade Britain in 43 AD, and they were renowned for being fierce fighters.

As with all my Museum Quality Replicas, this pot has been made, as the original would have been, entirely by hand from natural clay and using replicas of the types of tool that the Roman makers would have used.
