Details
The fertility of both people and agriculture were of vital importance to the Romans, whose existence relied upon a good harvests and a health population.  Therefore they had a wide range of deities associated with fertility, one of whom was the goddess Ceres.   She is  said to have been responsible for overseeing the welfare of fertility, agriculture, grain crops and motherhood.  And her effigies would have been used in a wide range of rituals,  from household worship to harvest festivals, in order to  gain her favour.  May she bring you good luck and an abundant harvest.

 Materials

White Earthenware or Pipe clay

Dimensions

Approx. 150 mm tall, 45 mm width, 35 mm depth

Production

This replica Roman pot has been hand made in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact.  It has been fired to a temperature of between 800 & 1000 Centigrade, to emulate the same techniques that the original potters would have employed nearly two thousand years ago. This process often results in variations of the surface colour and texture, as is common with the original Roman Pottery and giving each piece it's unique character.
