Details

Within every Roman house, there would have been a sacred shine, or lararium, dedicated to the guardian spirits of the home. These lararia would have been visited daily by the family members, who would perform rituals to maintain these domestic spirits' protection. In addition, a vital part of every lararium would have been the statues of significant gods and goddesses, for whom the family could leave an offering.

This beautiful little Venus figure was a popular effigy within the household shrine, as fragments of her have been discovered on sites across the Roman Empire. And as the goddess of love, sex, beauty and fertility, it is no wonder she held an important position in the minds of Roman citizens.

Originally made in Gaul, and possibly in the Thames Valley, from white clay, which would, much later, become known as pipe clay for its use in clay pipes.

Materials

White Earthenware or Pipe clay

Dimensions

Approx. 140 mm tall, 40 mm base diameter

Production

As with all our Museum Quality Replicas, we have made this piece, as the original would have been, entirely by hand from natural clay and using replicas of the types of tools that the ancient makers would have used. As each item varies, you may not receive the same vessel in the image, but you can be sure that it will be one of a kind due to the variations caused by the firing process.
