Details

This replica of a Loving Cup was made as a spare for the English National Theatre performance of Far From the Madding Crowd.  A number of cups went to take a starring role in the performance, but this cup was surplus to requirement.

During this period, celebrants used loving Cups for ceremonial drinking, where a cup was passed around several people to represent the friendship, trust and unity between the group.  Such rituals often took place at weddings, banquets and meetings where different families or political groups might want to cement the bonds of affiliation.

Modern trophies given as rewards to the winning team or persons are often based on the traditional loving cup.

Production

We have hand-made this replica pot in our studio in beautiful Northumberland based on an original artefact.  It has been to a temperature of between 800 & 1000 Centigrade, using the same techniques that the original potters employed.  This process often results in variations in surface colour and texture, emulating original ancient pottery and giving each pot its unique character.

 Health & Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica made using the tools and techniques that ancient potters would have used during this era.  This is a partially glazed pot with some porous surfaces, and therefore, it will absorb the flavours of the food being stored or served, which adds to the flavour of future dishes.  However, it also means that this pot does not meet modern Health and Safety standards, so we do not advise that it be used for storing or serving food.  When the ancient people used these vessels, they applied sufficient heat to the cooking pot and its contents to kill all bacteria.  Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have killed most disease-causing bacteria, and temperatures of 100°C would do even more.
