Handcrafted Puzzle Jug – The Lambton Worm
Details

Puzzle jugs are brilliant fun! A descendant of the earlier fuddling cup, these jugs were particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, though examples date back to the medieval period. They continue to cause great amusement when presented to the uninitiated.

This green-glazed puzzle jug celebrates the legendary tale of Sir John Lambton and the “Aaaafuuul Lambton Worm”, with the chorus of the traditional folk song inscribed around the collar.

Just like Sir John, anyone attempting to drink from the jug must face a seemingly impossible challenge—getting to the contents without spilling a drop. Almost impossible without knowing the trick… but surprisingly easy once you do.

Decorated with handcrafted Lambton Worm (dragon) head spouts, and featuring hand-cut holes around the neck, this jug is made in the traditional style—both entertaining and beautifully made.

Inscription:
Whist lads haad yor gobs
Aa'll tell he's aall an aaful story
Whist lads hadd ye's gobs
An' aa'll tell ye's boot the Worm

Earthenware with green glaze

Health & Safety

As with all our museum-quality replicas, this jug has been fired for authenticity and function. Like the originals, it contains a series of internal tubes that allow the drink to be sipped (like using a straw). While clever, these tubes can be difficult to clean thoroughly.

We strongly recommend using only water in this jug, as other beverages may leave residues that are hard to remove. It is essential that the jug is fully dried after use to prevent mould growth inside the internal channels.

DO NOT USE the jug unless you are confident it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried.

Production

This puzzle jug was handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by historical examples. It was wheel-thrown, then finished with a traditional green glaze, closely emulating the original colour and texture.
