This authentic replica of a Roman tile antefix bears the LEG XX inscription alongside the boar emblem of the 20th Legion.

The original tile, dating to the 2nd–3rd century AD, was excavated by archaeologists in Holt, Clwyd, and is now part of the Roman collection at the British Museum.

These tiles would have been positioned along the eaves of Roman buildings, serving both a functional and symbolic purpose. Manufactured by the Roman army’s 20th Legion in Romano-Britain, they proclaimed the Legion’s presence, reinforcing its strength and dominance over the region.

The 20th Legion (Legio XX Valeria Victrix) was one of the four legions brought over by Emperor Claudius during the invasion of Britain in 43 AD. Renowned for their ferocity in battle, they played a crucial role in the conquest and defense of Roman Britain.
