Roman Dea Nutrix Statuette Goddess
Details
Within every Roman house, there would have been a sacred shine, or lararium, dedicated to the guardian spirits of the home. This lararia would have been visited daily by the family members, who would perform rituals to protect these domestic spirits. A key part of every lararium would have been the statues of significant gods and goddesses for whom the family could leave an offering.
One such goddess is the Dea Nutrix, or Mother Goddess. This figure is based on one found at Margidunum near Nottingham and shows a Mother seated in a basketwork chair, feeding two babies.
A similar figure was also unearthed in Hertfordshire and is an example of parental love from the past. She was discovered in a child's grave in Baldock, Hertfordshire. Whoever placed this ceramic figure in that grave demonstrated a desire to provide love and care for that child into the afterlife. It is a touching symbol of parental affection for a cherished child.
