Handcrafted Replica Roman Votive Pot – Inspired by a Find from Vindolanda

Details

This charming votive pot is inspired by an original found at Vindolanda, one of the most significant Roman sites in Britain. When the original was unearthed, Vindolanda archaeologists described it as:

"Something a little bit special today from the Vindolanda excavations. This is a complete votive pot. It is packed full of mud and hopefully some of the original content too. The reverse is plain. One side very much looks like an owl!"

The visible fingerprints on the pot are a natural result of the handcrafting process, just as they would have been nearly two thousand years ago. Each fingerprint is a reminder of the human touch in ancient craftsmanship. If you would like to learn more about the significance of fingerprints in pottery, you can read our blog on the subject here.

Materials

  • Earthenware, terracotta

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 100 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 80 mm

Production

Each museum-quality replica is handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by original artefacts. This votive pot has been wood-fired to replicate an authentic Roman firing, reaching temperatures between 800°C and 1000°C.

This traditional process often results in natural variations in surface colour and texture, ensuring that each piece is unique—just like the original finds. When ordering, you may not receive the exact vessel shown in the photographs, and slight differences in colouring may occur.

Health & Safety

This museum-quality replica has been made using authentic Roman tools and techniques. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb liquids and flavours over time, much like original Roman pottery.

  • Not food safe: Due to its porous nature, this vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
  • For display and experimental archaeology purposes only: While some enthusiasts use these replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
  • The Romans ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
