Vulcan Jar
Details
This replica Roman storage Jar bears the symbols of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, blacksmiths, forges, the art of sculpture, artisans and volcanoes.
The first child born to Juno and Jupiter, his birth was not the joyous event it should have been. On seeing her brand new son, Juno was horrified at what she saw as a stunted, ugly little creature, so she cast him off Olympus. He bounced down the mountain and into the sea, in the process permanently damaging his foot, which gave him a lifelong limp.
In later life, he proved his worth to the Gods of Olympus and was given an entire valley for his forge, where he made many magnificent objects. These included Athena's shield, Eros' arrows, the armour worn by Achilles during the Trojan War and Hermes' winged helmet, to name just a few. He was clearly a highly skilled craftsman, so it is no wonder that Roman potters paid tribute to him by including his symbols, tongs and hammer in their pottery.

Production
This replica Roman pot has been hand-made in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact. It has been fired to a temperature between 800 & 1000 Centigrade to emulate the same techniques the original potters would have employed nearly two thousand years ago. This process often results in surface colour and texture variations, as is common with the original Roman pottery and gives each piece its unique character.
Health and Safety
This is a Museum Quality Replica made using the tools and techniques that would have been used during the Roman era. As this is an unglazed pot with a porous surface it will absorb some of the flavours of the food being stored, which does add to the flavour of future dishes. However, it does also mean that this pot does not meet modern Health and Safety standards, and therefore, we do not advise that it be used for storing food. When the Romans used these storage jars they would rely on applying sufficient heat to the cooking pot and their contents to ensure that all bacteria was killed. Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have killed most disease-causing bacteria, and temperatures of 100°C would do even more.
