Handcrafted Replica Amesbury Grape Cup
Details
This beautifully intricate replica Grape Cup is based on an original find from a primary cremation bowl barrow in Amesbury. A vessel of great symbolic significance, it was carefully placed alongside the remains of a loved one, perhaps as an offering or a treasured keepsake for the afterlife.
Creating a grape cup is a true labour of love, with each bead of clay individually applied—requiring time, care, and patience. One can imagine the original maker reflecting on the life of the person this vessel would accompany as they painstakingly shaped each delicate detail.
This cup is decorated with raised clay beads encircling its surface, along with impressed chevron patterns around the rim and base. To achieve these impressions, we have used a flint edge tool, faithfully replicating the techniques of the original Bronze Age potters.
Theories Behind Its Purpose
Often referred to as an incense cup, the true function of these vessels remains a mystery. However, one compelling theory suggests they may have been used to transport smouldering embers from the home hearth to the ceremonial cremation site.
- The raised clay beads may have allowed airflow, ensuring the ember remained alight while also protecting the bearer’s hands from heat.
- This could explain why these cups were frequently discovered among burial goods—perhaps playing a role in funerary rites.
- In experiments, we have found that grape cups also function well as hand warmers, though whether this was their original purpose remains unknown.
Regardless of their use, these cups are stunning relics of ancient craftsmanship and tradition.
Materials
- Smoke-fired terracotta
Dimensions
- Diameter: Approx. 75 mm
- Height: Approx. 45 mm
Production
As with all my Museum Quality Replicas, this pot has been entirely hand-built using natural clay and traditional tools, mirroring the methods of prehistoric potters.
- The cup has been fired in a wood fire, recreating the surface colouration of the original.
- It has been finished with beeswax polish, a material that has been identified in prehistoric pottery residues.
- Where evidence of ancient tool use exists, I have replicated those tools using stone, wood, shell, bone, and antler, based on original artefacts.
Firing Process
To achieve an authentic finish, this pot has been fired in direct contact with fuel, just as the original potters would have done.
- Open wood firing creates natural colour variations on the surface.
- However, because low-temperature firings result in fragile pottery, this beaker has been fired at a slightly higher temperature for additional durability.
Health & Safety
This is a Museum Quality Replica and not intended for use as a cooking vessel.
