Handcrafted Replica Bronze Age Irish Bowl Food Vessel

Details

This authentic replica is based on a stunning Bronze Age food vessel unearthed in 1864 by Canon Greenwell at Glebe Cairn, Kilmartin. This exquisite bowl was discovered within a burial cist alongside a jet necklace, which was tragically lost in a house fire.

Kilmartin Glen is home to a magnificent linear cemetery, consisting of five cairns stretching over a mile along the valley floor. Glebe Cairn, the most northerly of these ancient monuments, dates to between 2000–1500 BCE and remains an impressive burial site, visible today as a large mound of stones.

During excavation, Greenwell found two rings of stones and two burial cists beneath the cairn. One of these cists contained this beautifully decorated food vessel and a jet necklace. While the necklace was lost, this remarkable vessel has survived and is now housed in the British Museum.

With this handcrafted museum-quality replica, you can bring a piece of history into your own home.

Materials

  • Smoke-fired terracotta

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 135 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 250 mm

Production

As with all my Museum Quality Replicas, this pot has been entirely hand-built from natural clay, using tools and techniques that mirror those of Bronze Age potters.

  • Decorated using bone and antler tools, just as the original potter would have done.
  • Each replica is individually handcrafted and then wood-fired, resulting in unique variations.
  • Due to the nature of this process, your vessel may differ slightly from the one pictured, but these variations add to its authenticity.

Firing Process

This pot has been fired to replicate ancient techniques, where the original would have been fired in an open wood fire, directly in contact with the fuel.

  • This produces natural variations in surface colour.
  • To ensure durability, this pot has been fired at a slightly higher temperature than the original.
  • The exterior has been finished with beeswax to give a soft sheen.

Health & Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica and not intended for use as a drinking or food vessel.

  • If you require replica pots suitable for food or beverages, please contact me before purchasing.
