Handcrafted Replica of the Dolní Věstonice Figurine – One of the World’s Oldest Ceramics

Details

This handcrafted replica is inspired by one of the most iconic ceramic figures from the Palaeolithic period, discovered at the site of Dolní Věstonice, in what is now Moravia, Czech Republic.

The original figurine, believed to date from around 25,000 to 23,000 BC, was found nestled in a layer of ash on the floor of a dwelling, alongside other small ceramic animals including a bear, lion, mammoth, horse, fox, rhinoceros and owl. These early ceramic sculptures offer a rare and precious insight into Ice Age belief systems and the symbolic world of our prehistoric ancestors.

One of the most evocative details revealed by modern analysis is that the original figure carries a child’s fingerprint, pressed into the clay before firing. This extraordinary human trace has been preserved for over 25,000 years, connecting us directly to the people who shaped her.

Created by mammoth hunters during the last Ice Age, these figurines are thought to have been deliberately placed in the landscape as symbolic offerings, perhaps to encourage fertility or ensure the success of a hunt. The figurines were shaped by hand from clay and then smoke-fired in open hearths, a technique we have carefully replicated in the creation of this piece.

Lucky Dip Option

Can’t decide? Choose our Lucky Dip and we’ll let fate choose your figurine. Each one is unique and beautiful in its own way, just like the Ice Age originals.

Materials
Smoke-fired terracotta

Dimensions
Approx. 115 mm tall

Variations
Each goddess is individually handmade and smoke-fired using traditional methods. As with the original Dolní Věstonice finds, the firing process produces a variegated finish with colours ranging from terracotta red to buff, to deep black. No two are the same.

Production
This museum-quality replica has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History. It has been smoke-fired using techniques consistent with Upper Palaeolithic ceramic production, resulting in natural variation in both surface texture and colour. These unpredictable finishes echo the processes of 25,000 years ago and make each figure one of a kind.
