Handcrafted Replica Black Burnished Ware Cooking Pot

Details

This wheel-thrown cooking pot is a faithful replica of Black Burnished Ware (BB2), a style of pottery that was widely produced and distributed throughout Roman Britain. These pots were essential kitchenware, commonly used for stewing meats, fruits, and porridge over a charcoal fire while balanced on a metal trivet.

The term Black Burnished Ware refers to the pot’s distinctive polished and blackened surface, often decorated with an incised lattice pattern. The black colouration results from a special firing technique in which oxygen is restricted during the final stages, creating the signature dark finish.

Archaeological Significance

Black Burnished Ware has provided archaeologists with valuable insights into Roman-era cuisine. Residue of burnt food found on original vessels from Dorset and Silchester has undergone chemical analysis, revealing the foods once prepared in these pots.

This particular pot is a BB2-style vessel, which differs from BB1 Black Burnished Ware in that it was wheel-thrown rather than hand-formed.

Materials

  • Earthenware, terracotta

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 175 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 150 mm

Production

As with all my Museum Quality Replicas, this pot has been handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, using natural clay and traditional Roman techniques.

  • Fired at 800–1000°C, emulating the authentic methods used by Roman potters nearly 2,000 years ago.
  • Surface variations may occur due to the traditional firing process, ensuring each piece is one of a kind, just like the original artefacts.

Health & Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica and not suitable for modern cooking.

  • Porous surface: This pot will absorb flavours during use, much like the original Roman vessels.
  • Not food safe: Due to its porous nature, this vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
  • Experimental archaeology: Some enthusiasts use these replicas for experimental archaeology. If you choose to do so, it is at your own risk.
  • Roman food safety: The Romans ensured their pots were safe by heating them and their contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
