Handcrafted Roman Bowl – Inspired by a Find from Hadrian’s Wall
This elegant Roman bowl is based on an example excavated from the magnificent Hadrian’s Wall, right here in the heart of Northumberland. Though simple in form, bowls like this one would have been a familiar sight across the Empire.
Used to serve everything from warm stews to grains or fruits, this style of bowl represents the Roman belief that beauty and function should go hand in hand. While not a high-status item, it would have added a subtle touch of style to even the humblest table. The Romans really did understand the joy of well-crafted everyday objects.
Materials
Terracotta clay, fired under reduction conditions
Dimensions
Approx. 115 mm tall
Approx. 170 mm diameter
Production
This museum-quality replica has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original Roman artefact found near Hadrian’s Wall. It has been wood-fired to a temperature between 800°C and 1000°C, using the same techniques and materials as Roman potters would have used nearly two thousand years ago. The firing process creates natural variations in colour and texture, giving each piece its own unique character.
Health and Safety
This is a Museum Quality Replica, created using historically accurate methods and tools. As with the original, this bowl is unglazed and has a porous surface. It will absorb the flavours of anything stored or served in it, enhancing the taste of future contents.
However, because of its porous nature, this piece does not meet modern health and safety standards, and we do not recommend using it for serving or storing food. In Roman times, these vessels would have been used with sufficient heating to ensure food safety. Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have killed most harmful bacteria, and temperatures of 100°C or more offered further protection.
This piece is ideal for historical interpretation, experimental archaeology, or simply as a beautiful and tangible piece of the past to enjoy in your home.
