Details
Cheers!  Romans would have used these charming little wine cups throughout the Empire to enjoy their favourite tipple, wine.  A style of Samian Ware, these cups are made in the form of Dragondorff 33; we know you love a bit of archaeological detail.

Samian Ware would have originally been made in Gaul, where the fine red illite clay deposits were ideal for producing this fine ware before being sent out to all the corners of the Roman Empire.

Production

This replica Roman pot has been hand-made in Northumberland by Potted History and is based on an original artefact.  It has been fired to a temperature between 800 & 1000 Centigrade to emulate the same techniques the original potters would have employed nearly two thousand years ago.  This process often results in surface colour and texture variations, as is common with the original Roman pottery and gives each piece its unique character.

Health and Safety

This Museum Quality Replica was made using the tools and techniques that ancient potters would have used during this era.  This is an unglazed pot with a porous surface; it will absorb some of the flavours during the cooking process/use, adding to the flavour of future dishes.  However, it also means that this pot does not meet modern Health and Safety standards, so we do not advise that it be used for cooking.  Although our replicas are often used for Experimental Archaeology purposes, you do so at your own risk if you choose to use this item for cooking,

When the Romans cooked in these pots, they relied on applying sufficient heat to the pot and contents to ensure that high temperatures killed all bacteria.  Heating to over seven °C for at least 10 minutes would have killed most disease-causing bacteria, and temperatures of 100°C would do even more.
