Details

Humble ink wells form a vital part of the chain of events, allowing us to gain a rich and intimate knowledge of the Roman people through written words.  From the writings of Pliny the Elder to personal letters discovered at Vindolanda Roman Fort, these firsthand accounts of life in the Roman era form a vital part of our understanding of these ancient people.

This replica Roman inkwell is based on finds from various sites across the vast Roman empire, and examples of similar ink wells make up part of the collection at the British Museum.

The inkwell has an in-turned rim to means that the inkwell is spill-resistant.

Production

This replica Roman pot has been hand-made in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact.  It has been fired to a temperature of between 800 & 1000 Centigrade to emulate the same techniques the original potters would have employed nearly two thousand years ago.  This process often results in variations of the surface colour and texture, as is common with the original Roman Pottery and giving each piece its unique character.

Materials

Terracotta

Dimensions

Approx. 75 mm tall, 85 mm width

 Health and Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica made using the tools and techniques that would have been used during the Roman era.  As such, the pot is unglazed as the original would have been with a porous surface.  This means it will absorb some of the ink during use.  Please let us know if you wish to have the internal surface glazed to reduce absorption.

Hello Graham and Sarah, I wanted to message because I ordered your holy grail pot for my dad's birthday and he is over the moon with it.

I love it! I love everything about it, what it represents, why you made it and the history behind it. It was worth the wait! Thank you so much.
