Roman Severn Valley Flared Mug / Cup
Handcrafted Replica Severn Valley Ware Flare Mug – Roman-British Style
Details
These rather lovely flare-rimmed mugs are one of the characteristic forms of Severn Valley Ware, a pottery style produced from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD in what is now Shropshire and the wider Severn Valley. Local Roman-British potters created a bustling industry along the river, supplying practical ceramics to communities across western Britain.
This striking form, with its distinctive wide flared rim, may have had a number of practical purposes. The large surface area could have helped cool hot liquids more quickly or allowed for easy serving of thick soups or stews. Whatever the reason, its bold shape certainly stands out and speaks to the creativity of ancient potters.
Severn Valley Ware was a truly local industry, with kiln sites found all along the valley, including near Wroxeter, the site of the Roman city of Viroconium. These wares were essential items in Roman-British homes and forts, used daily by soldiers and citizens alike during meals and communal gatherings.

Production
This museum-quality replica has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, following the authentic methods of Roman potters:
-
Thrown on a potter’s wheel using natural clay
-
Shaped and finished with replicas of Roman-era tools
-
Fired to between 800 and 1000°C, replicating the firing conditions of ancient kilns
As each item is handmade, slight variations in colour and surface texture will occur, making each mug entirely unique.
Health and Safety
This is a Museum Quality Replica made using traditional tools and techniques. As an unglazed vessel with a porous surface, it may absorb some of the flavours of liquids during use. While this adds to its historical authenticity, it also means:
-
This mug does not meet modern Health and Safety standards
-
We do not recommend using it for drinking, cooking, or storing foodstuffs
-
In ancient times, pots were heated to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria. Modern health guidelines require higher safety standards, so we advise you enjoy this replica as a decorative or educational piece
