Handcrafted Replica Samian Ware Bowl – Diana, Hercules & Lion
Details

This stunning replica of a Roman Samian Ware bowl, dating to around the second century AD, features detailed scenes of Diana, goddess of the hunt; Hercules, the divine hero; and a powerful lion. It has been made using the same hand-forming techniques that would have been used by Roman potters nearly 1,900 years ago.

As with all decorated Samian Ware bowls, the process began by crafting a series of punches that match the exact dimensions and motifs used by the original mould makers. These were carved from fine terracotta clay and, once fired, were used to create the decoration within the bowl mould. The mould was then fired to 1000°C, mounted onto a potter’s wheel, and the bowl was formed inside it while spinning at speed.

After partially drying, the bowl—having shrunk slightly—was removed from the mould, replaced on the wheel, and a foot-ring was added. Once dried again, it was dipped in a colloidal terra sigillata slip, the liquid clay responsible for the bowl’s iconic red finish and glossy sheen.

Finally, following another week of drying, the bowl was fired once more to nearly 1100°C. All processes have been faithfully replicated based on the techniques used in Samian Ware workshops in Roman Gaul during the 1st to 3rd centuries AD.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic Roman tools and techniques.
Not food safe: This piece is unglazed and porous, meaning it absorbs liquids and does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Ancient users ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
