This lively replica Roman Barbotine “Hunt Cup” is based on an original find from Colchester and it beautifully captures the speed and energy of the race. It depicts four chariots careering around the cup in an everlasting chase that embodies the excitement of a Roman Chariot Race. You can almost hear the cheering and jeering of crowd.
The energy of the race is depicted perfectly by the barbotine decoration which has to be applied with a speed and confidence that really suits this type of scene. It is created by applying thick slip (liquid clay) to the surface of the pot using a piping bag and quill, in a process not dissimilar from cake icing.
Approx 180 mm tall, 160 mm diameter
As with all my Museum Quality Replicas this pot has been made, as the original would have been, entirely by hand from natural clay and using replicas of the types of tool that the Roman makers would have used.
