Handcrafted Replica Roman Indented Cup – Inspired by Finds from Roman Britain

Details

This authentic replica Roman cup is inspired by drinking vessels widely used in Roman Britain during the 3rd and 4th centuries. These elegant cups were likely used for drinking wine, with their distinctive surface indentations serving as a form of handle, allowing for a secure grip while in use.

Originally produced in the Nene Valley, near present-day Peterborough, these cups were widely distributed throughout Britannia, with many examples found along Hadrian’s Wall. Their widespread presence suggests they were an essential part of everyday life for the Roman-British population.

Each of our replicas has been wheel-thrown and hand-shaped, carefully replicating the distinctive indentations and craftsmanship of the original pieces.

This listing is for one cup.

Materials

  • Terracotta, reduction fired

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 185 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 140 mm

Production

Every piece in our Museum Quality Replica collection is carefully handcrafted using tools and techniques faithful to the Roman era. The cup has been shaped on a potter’s wheel and finished by hand to create the distinctive indentations, ensuring it remains as close as possible to the original Roman design.

As with all handmade replicas, slight variations in shape, size, and surface texture make each piece truly unique. Please note that the item you receive may differ slightly from the image provided.

Health & Safety

This is a museum-quality replica, crafted using traditional Roman tools and techniques. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb flavours over time, much like the original drinking cups used in Roman Britain.

However, as this cup does not meet modern health and safety standards, we do not recommend using it for storing or serving liquids.
