Handcrafted Replica Amlash Pottery Vessel – Inspired by Iron Age Artefacts from Northern Iran

Details

This remarkable vessel is inspired by Amlash Iron Age pottery from Northern Iran, a style renowned for its intricate artistry and technical sophistication. The original artefacts, named after the town of Amlash in south-eastern Gīlān, Iran, represent one of the most fascinating archaeological traditions of the region. The Amlash culture, spanning from the late 2nd century BCE to approximately 224 CE, remains shrouded in mystery due to the looting and illegal excavation of many sites. This has tragically led to the loss of invaluable historical context for numerous artefacts.

Amlash pottery is celebrated for its sculptural detail and timeless beauty, often depicting animals with striking elegance. Some vessels clearly represent identifiable creatures such as bulls, goats, and deer. Others, like the inspiration for this replica, feature abstract or fanciful zoomorphic forms, leaving their precise significance open to interpretation.

This unique replica is meticulously crafted using a combination of wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques, carefully balancing traditional craftsmanship with artistic precision. The process of creating this vessel mirrors the skill of the ancient potters, who demonstrated a profound understanding of their materials, an advanced aesthetic sensibility, and unparalleled expertise.

Historical Context

The Amlash culture offers a glimpse into the sophisticated artistry of Iron Age Iran. Despite the challenges of reconstructing its history due to the loss of archaeological records, surviving pottery pieces convey a story of innovation, creativity, and cultural significance. The elaborate zoomorphic designs continue to captivate modern audiences, transcending time with their universal appeal.

Materials

  • Terracotta with red slip
  • Hand-carved decorative detail

Dimensions

  • Height: 205 mm
  • Diameter: 125 mm
  • Length: 220 mm

Firing Process

This replica has been fired using a technique designed to emulate ancient methods. While the original artefacts would have been fired in open wood fires, resulting in surface colour variations and more fragile structures, this piece has been kiln-fired at higher temperatures. This process enhances durability while preserving the authentic appearance and feel of the original pottery.

Production

Every piece in our Museum Quality Replica collection is entirely handcrafted from natural clay. The tools and techniques used are faithful recreations of those employed by ancient artisans. Each decoration is applied by hand, reflecting the intricate detail and artistry of the Amlash culture. As with all handmade items, slight variations in shape, size, and colour ensure that your piece is truly one of a kind. Please note that the item you receive may differ slightly from the image provided.
