Ancient Woman, Nude Cypriot Figure, Late Bronze Age
Cypriot Terracotta Figurine – Inspired by a Late Bronze Age Original
This evocative terracotta figurine is a museum-quality replica inspired by figures from the Late Cypriot II–III period, dated to approximately 1450–1200 BCE. The piece draws particularly on an example now held in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, part of the renowned Cesnola Collection, which preserves the rich artistic heritage of ancient Cyprus.
The original was hand-modelled in terracotta, designed to fit snugly in the palm of the hand. Though modest in scale, she carries a striking presence. She stands nude, with a beautifully tapering lower body and gently curved arms that draw attention to the centre of the torso. Her face is stylised and abstract, with a flattened form, prominent nose, arched brows, and large ears, characteristic features in Bronze Age Cypriot sculpture.
Incised lines on the hips and abdomen add a layer of mystery. Are they tattoos, scarification, or a representation of clothing? These recurring motifs appear across figures from this period, suggesting that they held deep cultural meaning. Perhaps they signified identity, status, fertility, or were linked to tribal or ritual traditions. As with much prehistoric and Bronze Age art, we are left to interpret their meaning from context, pattern, and possibility.
Although we may never know her exact purpose, figures like this are commonly found in domestic spaces, tombs, and shrines. It’s believed they served ritual or votive functions, offering protection, fertility, or invoking divine favour. In her simplicity lies her strength, an object meant to be handled, held, and honoured.
Our replica has been hand-built using methods and materials in keeping with Bronze Age Cypriot practice. Every surface bears the subtle marks of the maker’s hands and tools, capturing the quiet beauty of the original.
This piece is perfect for collectors, educators, museums, and all those drawn to the sacred, symbolic, and everyday lives of the ancient Mediterranean world.
