Handcrafted Replica Gaulish Green-Glazed Beaker – Inspired by a Rare Roman Ceramic Tradition

Details

We were inspired to create this Gaulish Green-Glazed Beaker after being tagged in a tweet by one of the many “sherd nerds” we follow—passionate archaeologists and enthusiasts who share fascinating finds from collections worldwide.

Gaulish green-glazed beakers were a distinctive type of Roman fineware produced in the western provinces during the early Imperial period (1st century CE). These small drinking vessels were crafted from light-coloured earthenware clay and coated in a translucent green lead glaze. They are particularly famous for their raised “scale” decoration, which gave the beaker a textured, scaly surface.

This beaker represents an early Roman experiment with lead-glazed tableware—a relatively rare innovation in an era dominated by unglazed or slip-coated ceramics. Production began in Gaul (modern-day France) under Augustus, with workshops in regions such as Lyon and the Allier Valley refining the technique. These beakers were exported across the Roman world, with fragments discovered in Britain, the Rhineland, and beyond.

The green glaze—produced using lead and copper oxide—gave these beakers a lustrous, glass-like finish, mimicking the appearance of precious metal or coloured glass vessels. They were likely seen as luxury tableware, valued for their visual appeal and tactile decoration. The overlapping scale motif, created by indidully hand-appliying each clay scale, enhanced their aesthetic, making them highly desirable drinking cups.

Our handcrafted replica faithfully recreates this rare and remarkable Roman artefact, bringing the artistry of Gaulish pottery back to life.

Height: Approx. 170 mm
Diameter: Approx. 130 mm

Production

Each museum-quality replica has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, using traditional Roman techniques:

  • Hand-thrown on a potter’s wheel, just as the originals were.
  • Barbotine slip decoration applied by hand, replicating the raised scale motif.
  • Lead-glazed in a second firing, using a process similar to the original Roman glazing method.
  • Fired between 800°C - 1,000°C, ensuring durability while maintaining an authentic surface texture.

As with all handmade ceramics, subtle variations in colour and texture occur due to the firing process, making each piece truly one of a kind.

Green Glaze & Safety Information

Our green glaze uses low-solubility lead, making it safe for decorative items. However, this beaker is NOT food-safe and should not be used for drinking or storing liquids.

  • DO NOT use this vessel for food or drink.
  • DO NOT store liquids inside the beaker.
  • Lead-glazed pottery from antiquity contained potentially harmful materials, and while we use modern low-solubility lead formulations, we still advise against food use.
  • If you require a food-safe alternative, please contact us to discuss a custom commission.
  • Hand wash only – avoid soaking, scrubbing, or dishwashing, as this may damage the glaze.

If you choose to use this item for Experimental Archaeology, you do so at your own risk.
