Details
Perfume has been fragrancing our lives for thousands of years, and the Greeks have been producing perfume for both men and women for millennia. So highly regarded were these sweet smelling oils that they were stored in elaborate and beautiful bottles, like this red slipped siren bottle. In Greek mythology sirens were considered to be highly dangerous creatures, that would use enchanting songs to lure sailors to their deaths. Often depicted as half bird, half woman this bottle is based on an example on display in the Palazzo Leoni Montanari in the Veneto region of Italy.
Materials
Terracotta and red slip
Dimensions
Approx. 145 mm tall, 195 mm long, 85 mm wide
Production
This replica has been hand made in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact. It has been fired to a temperature of between 800 & 1000 Centigrade, to emulate the same techniques that the original potters would have employed nearly two thousand years ago. This process often results in variations of the surface colour and texture, as is common with the original Greek Pottery and giving each piece it's unique character. Each siren is individually hand stamped and might vary slightly.
