Details
This fabulous replica of a tortoise votive is based on an original artefact that is part of the Shefton collection at the Great North Museum. We first made this figure as part of our work with the museum, which provided us with detailed images and dimensions so we could accurately replicate it.

Votive offerings were a common part of daily life and worship in ancient times, and sherds of these a wide variety of votive figures have been found in the thousands across the ancient world.

Ceramic body parts, food and animals all make up the vast catalogue of votive statues. They would have been produced in their thousands by potters throughout ancient Greece and later throughout the Roman empire.

Devotees left these delightful little objects at temples and religious sites as offerings to the gods. One presumption is that they were gifted to conjure divine intervention and gain favour with a particular deity. They may also have been left as thanks after the event to honour the gods whose intervention was gratefully received.

It is also thought that these figures may have been used as funerary objects and as toys.

Dating from the 5th-4th century BC.

Production

This replica Roman pot has been hand-made in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact.  It has been fired to a temperature of between 800 & 1000 Centigrade to emulate the same techniques the original potters would have employed nearly two thousand years ago.  This process often results in variations of the surface colour and texture, as is common with the original Roman Pottery and giving each piece its unique character.
