Roman God of Beginnings, Time and Duality
Inspired by an Original in the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya
Details
This striking and contemplative bust of Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, endings and transition, captures one of the most distinctive and symbolic figures in the Roman pantheon. With two faces set back to back, Janus looks simultaneously into the past and the future, embodying the passage of time itself.
This replica is inspired by an original bust housed in the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya, preserving a form that would have been instantly recognisable across the Roman world.
In Roman religion, Janus occupied a unique and powerful position. He was the god of thresholds and transformations, presiding over doorways, gates, journeys and moments of change. Whether marking the opening of a new venture or the closing of an old chapter, Janus was always present at the turning point.
His influence extended from the intimate to the imperial. Janus was believed to oversee birth and new beginnings, guiding individuals through life’s earliest transitions, while also standing at the symbolic gateway of the Roman state itself. The famous Temple of Janus in Rome stood as a barometer of peace and conflict. Its doors were opened in times of war and closed in times of peace, though history suggests they were rarely shut for long.
Unlike many Roman deities, Janus had no dedicated priesthood. Instead, his importance was such that he was invoked at the beginning of nearly every religious ceremony, regardless of which god was being honoured. He was, quite literally, the first presence called upon in Roman ritual life.
It is from Janus that we derive the name of the month January, a fitting tribute to a god who governs beginnings and invites us to look both backwards and forwards as we step into the unknown.
This bold bust form reflects that dual nature, a powerful and thought provoking presence that feels as relevant today as it did in antiquity.
