 Details

This magnificent 'jug cavalry jug' is made in the style of Scarborough ware inspired by a sherd from the collections at Hull Museum. This pottery style was all the rage around the 13th-14th century. Lustrous green-glazed Scarborough ware has been found throughout North England and Scotland and is a charming addition to any table.

Elaborate green glazed jugs were popular during the Medieval period, and zoomorphic faces and scenes of chivalry were common themes. These fantastic decorative features were either hand-modelled or moulded, then applied to the surface of wheel-thrown pots. It was probably used in a tavern or domestic setting to serve beer or wine. It is a fun but functional item.

Materials

Earthenware, green glazed.

Dimensions

Approx 355 mm tall, 185 mm wide

Production

This replica has been hand-made in Northumberland by Potted History; original artefacts inspire it. As with the original, this replica has been wheel-formed and has been finished using a Green glaze to emulate the original glaze used.
