Miniature Roman Tile Antefix – LEG XX with Boar Emblem

Details

This finely crafted miniature replica is based on a Roman tile antefix stamped with the inscription LEG XX and the boar emblem of the 20th Legion—a fierce and highly respected unit of the Roman army. While the original tiles were full-sized architectural pieces, this scaled-down version captures all the detail and character of the originals in a more accessible size.

The full-sized tiles, dated to the 2nd–3rd century AD, were used to decorate the eaves of Roman tiled roofs, produced by the Roman army’s 20th Legion during their time in Romano-Britain. One such example, excavated in Holt, Clwyd, is now part of the British Museum’s Roman collection.

These tiles served both a decorative and declarative purpose—proclaiming the strength and presence of the legion wherever they were stationed. The boar, a symbol of determination and ferocity, was a perfect match for the reputation of the LEG XX Valeria Victrix.
