Details

This replica tile antefix has the inscription LEG XX and the boar emblem of the 20th legion. The original full-sized tiles are dated to the 2nd-3rd century, AD, and would have been one of a row of ornate tiles set along the eaves of a tiled Roman roof. The tiles were manufactured in Romano-Britain by the tilery of the Roman army's 20th legion. An example of a similar tile excavated by archaeologists in Holt, Clwyd, is now housed in the Roman collection at the British Museum.

Used to proclaim the presence of the 20th legion, these tiles represent a show of strength and power to all who saw them. The legion was one of four legions brought over by Claudius to invade Britain in 43 AD, and they were renowned for being fierce fighters.
