Handcrafted Replica Roman Chatterware Storage Jar – Inspired by Ancient Kitchenware

Details

This elegant Roman storage jar has been decorated in the chatterware (or rouletted) style, a technique that adds distinctive, rhythmic markings to the surface of the vessel.

The chatterware technique involves placing the partially dried pot back onto the wheel and bouncing or chattering a tool over its surface to create the intricate decoration. Though not considered a high-status object at the time, jars like this would have been a staple of Roman kitchens, adding a touch of simple beauty to everyday storage.

The Romans truly understood how to create practical objects with aesthetic appeal, and this style of jar reflects their timeless craftsmanship.

Materials

  • Terracotta clay
  • Fired under reduction conditions

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 230 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 145 mm

Production

Each museum-quality replica is handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact. This pot has been wood-fired in an authentic replica of a Roman pottery kiln at Vindolanda Museum, reaching temperatures of 800°C to 1000°C, replicating the same techniques used by Roman potters nearly two thousand years ago.

The traditional firing process naturally results in surface colour and texture variations, ensuring that each jar is unique, just like the original Roman finds.

Health & Safety

This museum-quality replica has been made using authentic Roman tools and techniques. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb liquids and flavours over time, much like original Roman pottery.

  • Not food safe: Due to its porous nature, this vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards for food use.
  • For display and experimental archaeology purposes only: While some enthusiasts use these replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
  • The Romans ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
