Handcrafted Pannonian Figure Flagons – Inspired by Roman Pottery from Pannonia

Details

This striking handcrafted Pannonian Figure Flagon draws inspiration from the extraordinary anthropomorphic pottery of Roman Pannonia, a province encompassing parts of modern Hungary, Austria and the Balkans. Inspired by surviving archaeological drawings, our design celebrates an unusual tradition in which potters transformed everyday vessels into expressive human figures.

What is a Pannonian figure flagon? Unlike conventional Roman pouring vessels, these remarkable ceramics incorporate human features directly into their form. Faces, elaborate hairstyles, jewellery, arms and clothing become part of the vessel itself, creating objects that are both practical in design and wonderfully sculptural.

These unusual vessels offer a fascinating glimpse into the cultural diversity of the Roman Empire, where local artistic traditions continued to flourish alongside Roman influences.

One particularly intriguing interpretation is that some of these vessels may depict women wearing traditional regional dress. Archaeological research has identified similarities between the clothing and jewellery represented on figure vases and those depicted on Roman funerary monuments from Pannonia, suggesting that these figures may reflect the appearance and identities of real women.

Some examples even appear to show women holding spinning equipment, perhaps reflecting the importance of textile production in everyday life. Others bear inscriptions suggesting they may have been given as personal gifts, possibly to celebrate marriages or other significant occasions.

But could these vessels have held a deeper meaning? Beyond their distinctive hairstyles, jewellery and clothing, might the figures have represented protective spirits, local deities or symbols of fertility and wellbeing? Their precise significance remains uncertain, but these possibilities invite us to explore the beliefs, traditions and personal relationships of the people who made and treasured them.

For us at Potted History, these unusual vessels offer a wonderful opportunity to explore the relationship between ancient craftsmanship, cultural identity and artistic expression. By recreating them from archaeological illustrations, we hope to bring a little of the personality and creativity of Roman Pannonia back into the modern world.

We have given each of our eight flagons a traditional Hungarian name to help us distinguish between these wonderfully characterful ladies and ensure you receive the figure you have chosen. These names are simply our own way of identifying each design and have no historical connection to the original artefacts.

Production

As with all our Museum Quality Replicas, this vessel has been handcrafted in Northumberland using traditional ceramic techniques inspired by ancient practice.

Individually formed from natural clay
Hand finished using traditional tools
Fired to achieve an authentic surface character
Subtle variations in tone and texture occur naturally during firing, ensuring that each piece is unique

Health and Safety

This is a Museum Quality Replica made using the tools and techniques that ancient potters would have used during this era.

As this is an unglazed vessel with a porous surface, it will absorb some of the flavours during use. However, this also means that it does not meet modern Health and Safety standards, and therefore we do not advise that it be used for storing or serving food.

When ancient cooks used ceramic vessels, they relied on applying sufficient heat to the pot and its contents to ensure that bacteria were destroyed. Heating to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes would have killed most disease causing bacteria, and temperatures of 100°C would do even more.
