Handcrafted Replica Severn Valley Ware Mug

Details

This sturdy mug is inspired by Severn Valley Ware, a distinctive Romano-British pottery tradition produced along the middle reaches of the River Severn during the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. Mugs like this were highly functional and formed a vital part of everyday life in Roman Britain.

These utilitarian vessels were likely used by both Roman soldiers and civilians to enjoy their drink of choice, perhaps wine, ale, or even posca. Though simple in form, they reflect a thriving local pottery industry that flourished under Roman influence.

Unlike high-status fineware, these mugs were made to be used, durable, practical, and found on sites ranging from forts and towns to rural settlements across western Britain. Holding this replica in your hand offers a direct connection to the daily life of ordinary people living under Roman rule.
