Handcrafted Replica Roman Votive Offering – Inspired by Ancient Healing Rituals

Details

Throughout the ancient world, votive offerings in the form of human body parts have been discovered by the thousands—notably at sites such as the Sanctuary of Asklepios in Epidaurus.

Greek and Roman supplicants left these ritual objects at healing sanctuaries and religious sites as offerings to the gods. The sheer volume of body-part votives found suggests they played an important role in ancient spiritual and medical practices.

While their precise purpose remains debated, many scholars believe they were:

  • Petitions for divine intervention during times of illness, injury, or disease.
  • Expressions of gratitude left after recovery, honouring the gods whose intervention was gratefully received.

The effectiveness of these offerings is unknown, but their popularity as a form of ancient healthcare is undeniable—though I, for one, prefer to rely on the hard-working folks of the NHS!

Materials

  • White earthenware or terracotta earthenware

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 60 mm
  • Width: Approx. 100 mm
  • Length: Approx. 225 mm

Production

Each museum-quality replica is handcrafted in Northumberland by Potted History, based on original artefacts. The votive has been fired at temperatures between 800°C and 1000°C, replicating ancient Roman pottery techniques as closely as possible.

The traditional firing process naturally results in variations in surface colour and texture, ensuring that each piece is unique, just like the original Roman votive offerings.
