Handcrafted Roman Flagon – Nene Valley Ware Style

Details

These Roman flagons have been made in the style of Nene Valley Ware, named after the large number of Roman pottery finds from the Nene Valley in modern-day Peterborough. This distinctive ware was widely produced and used throughout Roman Britain, known for its functional forms and regional variation.

Flagons like this were everyday household items across the Roman Empire—essential for collecting and storing goods such as beer, wine, water, or olive oil. If you were visiting your local tavern, vintner, or oil seller, you would bring a flagon just like this one to have your purchase carefully decanted from a large amphora.

Practical yet elegant, vessels like this were a fundamental part of life in both urban and rural Roman communities.

Materials
Earthenware terracotta

Dimensions
Height: Approx. 230 mm
Diameter: Approx. 130 mm

Production

This replica has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, based on original Roman artefacts. It has been fired to a temperature between 800°C and 1000°C, closely reflecting the firing techniques used by Roman potters. This process naturally produces surface colour and texture variations, giving each flagon a unique and authentic character.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using the tools and techniques that would have been used during the Roman era.
Not food safe: This vessel is made from unglazed earthenware, which is naturally porous. Over time, it will absorb the flavours, oils, and liquids it comes into contact with. While this was valued in Roman kitchens, it means the vessel does not meet modern health and safety standards.
For display purposes only: Some choose to use replicas like this in experimental archaeology, but do so at their own risk.
In Roman times, people ensured hygiene by heating pots and their contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill harmful bacteria. Temperatures of 100°C or more provided even greater protection.
If you require a food-safe alternative, please contact us to discuss a custom commission.
