Handcrafted Replica Oxfordshire Redware Flagon – Inspired by Roman Britain

Details

This authentic replica Roman flagon is inspired by Oxfordshire Redware, one of the finest examples of British industry during the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, when Britain was part of the Roman Empire. This period saw the mass production and distribution of high-quality Oxfordshire tableware, which became a staple across Roman Britain.

Jugs, flagons, and pitchers were everyday essentials in Roman households, used for collecting, storing, and serving liquids. If you were visiting your local beer, wine, or olive oil seller, you would have been expected to bring a vessel like this to collect your purchase. Merchants would then carefully decant the liquid from a large amphora into your jug, making these vessels an essential part of daily life.

This replica has been faithfully handcrafted, ensuring it captures both the functionality and elegance of the original pieces.

Materials

  • Earthenware clay

Dimensions

  • Height: Approx. 280 mm
  • Diameter: Approx. 145 mm

Production

Every piece in our Museum Quality Replica collection is carefully handcrafted using tools and techniques faithful to the Roman era. This flagon has been shaped and fired using traditional methods, ensuring an authentic finish that mirrors the craftsmanship of Roman potters nearly two thousand years ago.

As with all handmade replicas, slight variations in shape, size, and surface texture make each piece truly unique. Please note that the item you receive may differ slightly from the image provided.

Health & Safety

This is a museum-quality replica, crafted using traditional Roman tools and techniques. As an unglazed and porous vessel, it will absorb liquids and flavours over time, much like the original flagons used in Roman Britain.

However, as this pot does not meet modern health and safety standards, we do not recommend using it for cooking, food storage, or serving liquids. The Romans ensured food safety by heating their pots and contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes, which would kill most bacteria. Heating to 100°C or higher would have been even more effective.
