Details

The burning of incense was an integral part of Roman votive rituals, allowing supplicants to make offerings to the gods from whom they desired patronage and protection.

The petitioner would place a lump of burning coal in the burner's upper bowl. On top of this would be placed the resin or herbs that would smoulder gently and produce sweet-smelling smoke. Frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, and rosemary were among the incense used during these rituals.

Please be aware that using this product will result in wear, staining and potential damage to the item; this will have been considered perfectly normal to the Romans, who would have expected to replace these items from time to time.

These items are second as they have visible cracks in the base of the bowl. Please look at all the images in the listing.  You may not receive the exact time photographed but each items has similar cracking.

'Add To Cart' items are ready to send straight away. Please be aware that if bought alongside 'Pre-order' items, your order will be sent when all items are ready.

'Pre-order' items are made to order, and we will dispatch them as soon as we have handcrafted them for you; this usually takes 90 days, but international orders can take a little longer.

This replica Roman pot has been hand-made in Northumberland by Potted History and is based on an original artefactIt has been fired to a temperature between 800 & 1000 Centigrade to emulate the same techniques the original potters would have employed nearly two thousand years ago. This process often results in surface colour and texture variations, as is common with the original Roman pottery and gives each piece its unique character.  This item was fired at Vindolanda Roman Fort in our replica Roman kiln, adding an extra layer of authenticity.
