Handcrafted Plain Roman Patera – Libation Bowl with Omphalos

This beautifully simple Roman libation bowl is a faithful replica of the kind of undecorated patera used in religious and domestic rituals across the Roman world. Its form is practical and symbolic, reflecting the deep reverence Romans held for their gods and ancestors.

In both Greek (phiale) and Roman (patera) traditions, these shallow bowls were used to offer wine, honey, milk or oil to the gods. The contents were often poured from a jug into the bowl, and then gently tipped onto an altar or the ground. These offerings were a vital part of prayers, dedications and festivals, connecting the earthly and divine.

This style features a plain central omphalos, or navel, which is hollowed to allow it to be held comfortably in the palm. This design allowed worshippers to perform rituals with grace and stability, even when the vessel was full. It is a quiet yet powerful form, free of embellishment, focused purely on function and ritual significance.

Each patera is handcrafted in Northumberland, using traditional tools and techniques. It offers a tangible link to the everyday rituals of Roman life and the values of devotion, respect and community.

Materials
Terracotta with a red slip finish

Dimensions
Approx. 45 mm tall, 180 mm diameter

Production
This museum-quality replica has been entirely handmade, using tools and processes the original Roman potters would have recognised. It is fired between 800°C and 1000°C, a traditional oxidised firing process that produces the warm terracotta tones typical of Roman pottery. Every piece has individual surface variation, making each one unique.

Health & Safety
This item has been fired to achieve an authentic Roman finish. It is unglazed and has no modern sealants, which means it retains its porous nature, just like original Roman pottery. As such, it does not meet modern food safety standards. While some enthusiasts may choose to use these replicas in experimental archaeology, we recommend them for decorative or educational use only.
Ancient cooks and worshippers ensured safety by heating the vessel and its contents to over 70°C for at least 10 minutes, which would have killed most bacteria. Higher temperatures around 100°C were even more effective.
