 Details

This striking jug is based on a find, dated to around the 13th century, from the excavations at Wood Quay, Dublin.  This ancient waterfront site lay north of an early medieval town wall and was excavated for the Museum of Ireland in 1974-6.

Situated on the edge of the river Liffey the site showed evidence of being used as a seasonal raiding camp for the Vikings before being developed over the centuries into a bustling and wealthy commercial centre of great import.

With all this activity came the deposition of layers of archaeology preserved in the waterlogged mud; one such find was the spout, handle and upper collar of this fabulous jug.  Like many pottery pieces from this period, it has been wheel thrown and then enhanced by adding a marvellous mythical creature, in this case, a terrifying dragon.  Jugs like this were probably used in taverns or domestic settings to serve beer or wine, it is a fun but functional item.
