Handcrafted Medieval Aquamanile – Scarborough Ware Style
Details

Originally a Persian tradition, aquamanilia were ritual vessels used to pour water for hand washing during both religious and secular ceremonies. Typically made from copper or bronze, these elaborate vessels often took the form of animals or humans. Hundreds of examples survive and are on display in museums around the world—proof of their cultural importance throughout the Medieval period.

The tradition reached Europe in the 12th century, flourishing until the 15th century. High-status households commissioned ornate metal aquamanilia, while more modest homes would instead acquire pottery versions, often inspired by the grander metalwork.

This replica is made in the style of Scarborough ware, and is inspired by a sherd from the collections at Hull Museum. Scarborough ware, with its distinctive lustrous green glaze, was popular during the 13th to 14th centuries, and has been found across northern England and Scotland. This piece brings a whimsical and historic charm to any table or collection.

Production

This aquamanile has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, inspired by original Medieval artefacts. It has been fired to temperatures between 800°C and 1000°C to emulate the conditions used by historical potters. The firing process produces natural variations in surface colour and texture, making each piece truly unique.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although this vessel is glazed, it is made from earthenware, which remains somewhat porous. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for food or drink use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Medieval users ensured hygiene and safety by heating water above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
