Handcrafted Medieval Bearded Man Jug – Scarborough Ware Style

Details

This splendid ‘bearded man jug’ is crafted in the style of Scarborough ware, inspired by one of the many pottery sherds held in the collections at Hull Museum. Popular in the 13th and 14th centuries, this distinctive green-glazed ware was widely distributed across northern England and Scotland—evidence of its enduring popularity.

These eye-catching jugs were often found in medieval taverns or households, used to serve beer or wine. Their decorative elements—like the bearded face—were either hand-modelled or moulded and then applied to wheel-thrown vessels, bringing personality and flair to everyday function.

This piece is both charming and practical, echoing the convivial spirit of medieval life.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although glazed, this vessel is made from earthenware, which remains somewhat porous. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for food or drink use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Medieval users ensured hygiene and safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
