Handcrafted Medieval Bearded Man Jug – Scarborough Ware Style
Details

This magnificent ‘bearded man jug’ is crafted in the style of Scarborough ware, inspired by one of the many Medieval sherds held in the collections at Hull Museum. Popular during the 13th and 14th centuries, Scarborough ware is easily recognised by its lustrous green glaze and has been discovered across northern England and Scotland—a true marker of its widespread appeal.

Elaborate jugs like this were fashionable during the medieval period, often used in taverns or domestic settings to serve beer or wine. The decorative features—such as the bearded face—were either hand-modelled or moulded, then applied to the surface of wheel-thrown pots, adding a touch of personality to these functional vessels.

This piece is both fun and functional, evoking the warmth and liveliness of a medieval gathering.

Production

This jug has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, based on original artefacts. It has been wheel-thrown and then finished with a traditional green glaze, closely replicating the methods and appearance of the original medieval pieces.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although glazed, this vessel is made from earthenware, which remains somewhat porous. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for food or drink use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Medieval users ensured hygiene and safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
