Handcrafted Medieval Jug Cavalry Jug – Scarborough Ware Style

Details

This magnificent ‘jug cavalry jug’ is crafted in the style of Scarborough ware, inspired by a visit to the wonderful Hull Museum, where we’ve had the pleasure of working every year for the past five years. The museum holds a fantastic collection of medieval sherds, and one of these inspired the creation of this characterful jug.

Scarborough ware, popular in the 13th and 14th centuries, would have graced the tables of taverns and homes alike. Its lustrous green glaze and widespread discovery across northern England and Scotland speak to its enduring appeal. A true talking piece, this jug is a delightful addition to any table or collection.

Zoomorphic faces and scenes of chivalry were popular motifs on medieval jugs, and this piece is no exception. These expressive decorative features were either hand-modelled or moulded, then applied to the surface of wheel-thrown pots. Likely used to serve beer or wine in a tavern or domestic setting, this jug is both fun and functional.

Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although glazed, this vessel is made from earthenware, which remains somewhat porous. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for food or drink use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Medieval users ensured hygiene and safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
