This magnificent ‘Knights and Dragon’ jug is crafted in the distinctive style of Scarborough ware, inspired by a sherd from the collections at Hull Museum. We’ve had the privilege of working with the museum for over five years and have spent many rewarding hours exploring their rich medieval collections. One particularly striking fragment served as the inspiration for this lively and imaginative jug.
Scarborough ware was all the rage in the 13th and 14th centuries, and its lustrous green glaze has been found across northern England and Scotland, a testament to its popularity and reach. Vessels like this would have been used in both taverns and domestic settings, likely serving beer or wine at gatherings of all sizes.
This piece features a dynamic scene of chivalry, with a knight and dragon, drawing on popular medieval themes that blended myth, storytelling, and status. Decorative elements—such as zoomorphic faces, heroic figures, and beasts—were either hand-modelled or moulded, then applied to wheel-thrown vessels, adding both drama and personality to these practical items.
Whether for display or conversation, this jug is a striking reminder of the imagination and craftsmanship of the medieval potter.

Production
This jug has been handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, and is directly inspired by original medieval artefacts. As with the historical pieces, this replica has been wheel-thrown and finished with a green glaze, capturing the look and character of the originals.
Health & Safety
Museum-Quality Replica: Made using authentic historical tools and techniques.
Not food safe: Although glazed, this vessel is made from earthenware, which remains somewhat porous. It does not meet modern health and safety standards for food or drink use.
For display purposes only: While some enthusiasts use replicas for experimental archaeology, doing so is at your own risk.
Medieval users ensured hygiene and safety by heating their pots and contents above 70°C for at least 10 minutes to kill bacteria, with 100°C or higher offering additional protection.
