Details
When you mention the Vikings, it immediately conjures up images of marauding warships and bloody battles, but, in truth, many Vikings chose to settle in the British Isles and get back to their farming roots.  Their arrival fuelled a revolution in pottery production, where the potter's wheel and mass production returned on a scale that had not been seen since the Roman period. Excavations in Torksey, Lincolnshire, unearthed many beautiful examples of pottery from this period, resulting in this style of pottery being known as Torksey ware.   However, this type of pottery has been found at another site within the British Isles.

The distinctive ribbed decoration is created by applying strips of clay to the surface of the pot and then using your fingers to mould the dimples.  This replica was then finished with a thin green glaze, which would have been rare at the time, as most pitchers of this period would have been unglazed.

'Add To Cart' items are ready to send straight away. Please be aware that if bought alongside 'Pre-order' items, your order will be sent when all items are ready.

'Pre-order' items are made to order, and we will dispatch them as soon as we have handcrafted them for you; this usually takes 90 days, but international orders can take a little longer.

 Materials

Grogged earthenware and green glaze

Dimensions

Approx 225 mm tall, 210 mm diameter

Health and Safety

As with all of our Museum quality replicas, this piece has been fired to achieve an authentic finish. Like the original it is not fully glazed,  as a result this pot does not meet modern health and safety standards and, although decorative, I would not recommend that this pot be used for its original purpose.

Production

This replica has been hand made in Northumberland by Potted History, based on an original artefact.  As with the original this replica has been wheel formed, it has then been finished using a Honey glaze to emulate the original glaze used.
