Details
This replica encrusted urn is based on an original vessel excavated in 1946 from an Early Bronze Age cemetery at Kilmagadwood, Scotland.
Kilmagadwood was clearly an important burial site, with 23 urn burials clustered within a 20-square-metre area. Archaeological evidence suggests the cemetery was in use for around four centuries, making it one of the largest Bronze Age burial sites ever discovered in Scotland.
The fine quality of the grave goods found alongside these burials suggests that the deceased held a special status within their community. The original urn from this excavation is now displayed at the National Museum of Scotland.
To add an extra touch of authenticity, this replica urn was made on-site at Kilmagadwood before being fired in Rothbury, Northumberland.

Production
This museum-quality replica has been entirely handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, using authentic Bronze Age techniques.
- Hand-formed from natural clay, as the original would have been
- Decorated using handmade antler tools, replicating Bronze Age craftsmanship
- Each piece is unique, with natural variations in surface colour and texture, just as seen in original artefacts
Firing Process
This urn has been fired to replicate ancient firing conditions.
- The original would have been fired in an open wood fire, in direct contact with the fuel, creating natural surface variations in the clay.
- However, because open firing at low temperatures results in weaker pots, this replica has been fired at a slightly higher temperature to improve durability.
- A specialised firing process ensures an authentic appearance while maintaining structural integrity.
- The exterior has been finished with beeswax, giving the pot a subtle sheen.
