Ancient Bronze Age Beaker Replica – Inspired by the Wilsford Barrow Group

Details

This finely handcrafted replica beaker is inspired by an original excavated from the Wilsford Barrow Group at Normanton Down, near Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. These barrows have stood for over 4,000 years and are key to our understanding of Bronze Age burial rituals and early society in Britain.

The vessel features a meticulously burnished surface and distinctive comb-tooth decoration, typical of beakers dating to around 2200 BCE. Originally, such beakers would have been used for drinking, their elegant forms reflecting the artistry and symbolism of the time.

This beaker was created as part of our Museum Quality Replica range, honouring both the functionality and beauty of ancient ceramics.

Historical Context

The transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, around 2500 BCE, saw the introduction of metalworking, highly decorated pottery, and a shift in burial practices. Beakers like this one became widespread, often found in graves and ceremonial sites, and are linked to broader cultural changes, including influences from continental Europe.

These beakers were more than just vessels—they were symbols of identity and status, used during feasting, rituals, and burial ceremonies. Their form and decoration showcase the creativity of Bronze Age potters and offer us a tangible connection to prehistoric lives.

Materials

Smoke-fired terracotta
Hand-twisted lime bast fibre cord (for decorative binding)

Dimensions

Height: Approx. 205 mm
Diameter: Approx. 160 mm

Firing

The pot has been fired using a method that emulates ancient open firings, where vessels would have been placed directly into wood-fuelled fires. These traditional firings produce natural surface colour variations. To strengthen this replica for handling and longevity, it has been fired at a higher temperature, achieving a durable finish with an authentic appearance.

Production

Handmade in Northumberland by Potted History, this replica has been constructed entirely by hand, using natural clay and replica tools based on those used by Bronze Age potters. The decoration has been applied using comb impressions and cordage techniques that reflect original archaeological finds. Because each beaker is handmade, there will be slight variations in shape, colour, and decoration, ensuring each one is truly unique.
